Department Priorities

Institutionalize student voting with Vote! CSU

Swing by the ASCSU office to register to vote, and then check out the Vote!CSU campaign. Voting is the most powerful tool students have available to them yet remains unutilized by a huge percentage of college students. Register to vote, make a difference.

Advocate to Amend Fort Collins’ Over-Occupancy Ordinance

The Three Unrelated Law is hotly contested by CSU students. However, due to low attendance at Council meetings, students’ ability to initiate a change in policy is limited.  A stronger presence at Council will allow students to make a greater impact and kick-start change. We thus seek to increase student involvement at City Hall through education and awareness.

Promote the issuance of boarding house permits

Boarding house permits ease some of the negative effects of associated with the Three Unrelated Law. This allows certain residential areas to accommodate more than three unrelated renters. These permits are few and far between, many of them inconveniently far from campus. The Department of Community Affairs this plans to advocate for increasing the number of boarding house permits, make these permits easier to apply for, and relieve some of the strictures on zoning requirements.

Push toward sensible rental housing safety standards

The Department of Community Affairs hopes to work with City Council to improve rental housing standards in order to create a better living experience for off-campus students. Rental housing standards would make home-owners more accountable for the livability of their residences.
